The Modern Nomads: Update

Note to readers:  I apologize for the formatting of this post.  I’ve spent two days trying to fix the problem.  Wordpress adds strange spacing everytime I save the post and I can’t seem to solve the problem.

Our new home is quirky. Because the home was originally built on a large lot, the architectural front of the house is now the side and the side of the house faces the street. Its a bit like trying to talk to someone who is looking at something else. You just kinda feel like the house isn't paying attention to you.

We’ll be calling Larchmont, New York home in the beginning of December. After first putting offers on two other houses, we ended up in a “project” house. It was built in 1925 and retains many of the original charms of the era, such as single pane windows, poor insulation and a teensy, boxy little kitchen in a back corner of the house. The upside is that I can pretend that the tradesmen are my friends until I actually make real new friends. The location is fantastic. The community seems warm, relaxed and friendly. And we’re only 30 minutes from Manhattan!

So why buy a quirky project house? For this.

...and this. That's Long Island Sound in the background.

As a move nears, my life becomes transition. We no longer really live in Hinsdale and we are not yet in Larchmont. All decisions about even the smallest detail are made to fit within the boundaries set by the move.

I am keenly aware of how close we are to moving day. I don’t make plans for the future. A failed spelling test doesn’t concern me because: a) I knew I didn’t have time to help my kid study and b) we can remedy such lapses “on the other side.” We are eating some super-funky meal combinations in an attempt to eat our way through the chest freezer and pantry. Burned out lightbulbs don’t get replaced. I’ve stopped buying fresh flowers for my house because, well, there’s no point to romancing it anymore- I’m breaking up with it.

Bundles of newsprint and boxes will soon be spirited through my front door. The distinctive chemical smell of those cigar-fat, black Sharpie markers will smother the lingering scent of recent meals and Mrs. Meyers geranium laundry detergent. A big orange tractor-trailer will appear like the grim reaper to announce “Your time in Hinsdale is over. I’m here to escort you to the world beyond.”

This is life as I know it. I can only imagine the life beyond.

The temporary home of Ready Prep Go! It's attractive enough, but there just isn't much to it.

I'm often asked if I could pull off the same culinary feats in a lesser kitchen. Now we'll know.

I won’t be posting new content to readyprepgo.com until January 1. I can’t imagine that I’m going to be able to write or shoot for a while. Here’s the fun part: I’m going to use the time to makeover the site. I’ll be adding social networking and enhancing the opportunities to interact with my readers and for my readers to connect with eachother. I’ll be streamlining the home page and making the content access more serendipitous. I love the look of it now and I know many of you do as well, but, honestly, don’tcha just like a fun change? I hate to carry the same handbag for more than six months- even if it is a fabulous one.

I will relaunch 1/1/11. Think of this as my Christmas present to you all.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Feel free to email me with your questions and continue to comment on posts. It gives me joy to hear from you.
